After the first attack you should be able to tell if you'll win the straight 1v1 fight, or even if you can gank someone in town before other people kill you. Gauge your opponents moves, if they strafe and move around they are generally decent players, bad ones will turn around and stand still trying to auto-attack you. Always bring stamina potions, casters usually have more stamina to burn sprint with so they will 99% of the time run farther than you, this brings me to my next point; use a damned crossbow, how many times have you let someone at like 1-2% just running away or getting into the water? Exactly. Flesh rot, which is a poison over time debuff, is a great way of killing pesky rangers or casters that root you at 2% and try to run. 3 health potions, cheap 1c ones, will keep you alive from mark of devourer so always carry those.

Use your stealthy ways to your advantage, if you're mean attack people who are at a vendor buying something; I had this guy say "**** you man I was counting my coins and you ****ing jump me? Thats unfair, you coward.". Executing combos can be a challenge, I find that if you think of the combination moves differently it isn't so bad, the actual directional attacks don't even have to hit your target, just focus on your last attack in the combo to hit your target and you will be dealing insane amounts of damage to all classes

Double tapping 'W' gives your character a 40% (I think) chance to stun your target for what seems to be .75 or 1 second long, I don't use it often because it's hard to use it correctly, lurching forward is awkward in battle and the stun lasts such a short time and it's extremely hard to see if it actually is applied to your target, can be used before a snap kick (Which is bugged right now!) and you could set up a nice combo I suppose.

Jousting:

(There is a technique that utilizes this "last hit only counts" mantra, jousting. Jousting is executing a combo on your target then running away and setting up another combo before running in and executing the combo yet again, guerrilla warfare at it's finest. ALSO, particularly effective time to use the double 'W' tap for the momentum buff, you can run in and stun while you combo and run out.)

I'm already killing classes 10-12 levels higher than me in legitimate combat. Stealth attacks from behind gives your target a slow debuff, in fact all attacks from behind slow your target which you will use to your advantage.

Deciding on what combo's to use isn't difficult, I usually set up 2 Two-hit Combos and 1 One-hit combo. When deciding on what you want to use look for:
1. Damage, your most important role
2. It's use (If it increases poison damage taken on target, and does good damage then you would probably want to use it first.)

Thirdly, some animations are longer than others, take that into consideration.

If you have decent ping it isn't difficult to sprint behind someone and start attacking. If you're running DIRECTLY behind someone, like touching their back, (which you achieve by the slow debuff they are receiving via being attacked from behind) you can execute combos on them (aka they can't outrun your animation if they stay moving forward), stay directly behind them as it reduces the chance you'll miss your target.

One of the things that keeps my character alive is the use of double tapping 'S'. It adds a buff on your character to give a high evade chance. I'm going down the poison feat tree and I got the talent Cat's Paw. It's like a 30% evasion buff. When someone jumps me or the fight has turned sour I double tap 'S' (Make sure you face them THEN double tap 'S' away, it will make it so your target can't hit your back side and slow you down) and pop cat's paw and I sprint away in a random direction often changing up my pattern of movement, ALWAYS save enough stamina to sprint for at least 3 seconds. I can't tell you the amount of times I've escaped PvP encounters just because of sprint.

Please get the first talent in the general feet tree that makes your character immune to knockdown, there are several classes with knockdown ability which can pretty much destroy your offensive attack. Usually when I get knocked down that fight is an automatic loss unless I had injured the target severely beforehand.

Make sure your aura, poison or unholy, are up as they are removed with death.

Learn the differences between the classes, aka their armor type and general health, it's good to know your classes and your skill limitations.

A lot of melee classes will actually have a casting bar near their name when they do a combo, you can keep an eye on that and dodge their most brutal attacks.
