This past weekend, I went on a spending spree. I decided to level up engineering, and level my alts jewelcrafting.
I also was very lazy about it, so I used what mats I had in my banks and bought the rest. In the end, I got to level 368 engineering and went from level 1 to the 225 max JC on my alt. But I spent 500g in the process. I didn't care to much about the money 500g is not that hard to make. I had it to spend without even trying, so I can easily double that for my mount by the time I hit 70(was 67 at the time).
The thing I didn't account for, occured maybe 30 minutes tops after I spent all my money. I was running Mana Tombs, and a few fights after the first boss, and ding. Sonofabitch. Never thought I would complain about a ding, but here I am with 2g and some odd silver to my name and I need to buy new spells.
I head to the hunter trainer and check to see what the damage will be. 7 spells I need to buy(checking here on Alla, aparantly I could have gotten some of them at 67, and I did not know that, now I feel a little foolish), all at about 13g each. Sonofabitch, I need 91g.
Oh well no biggie, I go out to Hellfire Penninsula and ride around mining Fel Iron Ore. 20g for a stack of bars, so thats 5 stacks of bars, 10 stacks of ore, shouldn't be too hard. I mine them up, and damn it was boring, I put the bars up at the AH and log off for the night. Log back on sunday, with the gold in the mail. I buy my new spells and am happy and go questing. After my night of questing I am sitting at a cool 60g, so I am thinking, yeah getting back up to 500g is going to be no problem.
Before I log out I put some things in my bank and take stock of what I have, some random quest items, some luxury items(remote controlled tonk ftw!!! lol), and some items that I'm holding onto just in case I will need them, which include about 10 stacks of netherweave, 5 primal life, 1 primal shadow, 10 primal earths.
So I think to myself, why am I holding this? If I really needed any netherweave it drops pretty regularly, I don't have any engineering recipes that use primal life or primal shadow. Why keep it? So I put the stuff up on auction, keeping the primal earth since I do need that to make adamantite frames for my adamantite rifle to level up.
Then I was thinking, what do my alts have in stock that I don't need? I have many alts, one main alt for each profession. To not get into specific detail I have a 312 alchemist/herbalist, a tailor, enchanter, jewelcrafter, letherworker, and blacksmith, all capped at 225 due to their levels.
As I progressed in levels I would send any mats that they could potentionally use. So after 68 levels those stockpiles increased greatly. Of course some was used, some were sold periodically, but I still had a good number of supplies. Various bars, echanting mats, around 600 runecloths, random gems, a little leather, and plenty of herbs.
So I put everything I had and couldn't imediately use up on auction. I really flooded the AH with all my junk. I logged back in last night on my alts 1st. Banked the things I didn't sell, sent all the gold to my main hunter(I need to update my sig). In the end I made 700+ gold, and still have some things I could try and sell if the need arised.
So I was sitting on a gold mine and didn't even think about it. How many of you have the same situation, where you have alts with different trades, and you hold onto mats, because they might need them, never really getting rid of them, essentially sitting on a gold mine of your own?
