FIrst of all, yes I am posting this from an alt because I don't need any server drama or horde rogues trying to gank me all day.
Long story short, I dinged 48 as a melee hunter and was looking around for something to do when I saw a dungeon on LFG called Sunken Temple. After some searching and asking around, I managed to find a rogue getting a run from his guildmates. The group comprised of a 70 priest a 68 warrior, a 66 shaman and, (you guessed it) a 54 rogue. I should have smelt the trouble from miles away and dropped group but since I was eager to run the dungeon for the first time, and it would b a breeze with the 70s at the helm, I decided to tag along anyway.
The run went smooth for the most part although I soon realized 48 was a bit too early to make this dungeon run (I died several times and I mean several). However, things went absolutely haywire when a sword dropped and being a melee spec hunter I naturally rolled need against the rogue.
Immediately after I won, the rogue as well as all the other people in the group began calling me things I can't repeat on here without getting banned and claimed that I shouldn't have rolled need on a rogue item (Um, since when are swords exclusive to rogues?)
I would have understood if the rogue got mad at me because soon after I won, it became apparent he had been trying to get the sword for a long time (apparently the sword doesn't drop very often if he's been trying to get it since level 47). However, the reason he got mad at me had nothing to do with the hours he sunk into trying to get it . He said those dreaded words us melee hunters hate to hear. "Hunters are a ranged class, and rogues are a melee class, so rogues should get swords over hunters"
First of all, let me flat out say this. Hunters are NOT a range exclusive class. Here is the evidence.
1. Feign Death. Feign Death. Let me say it again for emphasis. FEIGN DEATH. This talent alone proves that hunters were meant to be a melee class. Why would hunters need feign death if we were designed to be a pure ranged class? If the mob is far from melee range, you shouldn't have to feign death because you should be able to run away, right? (Note that PURE ranged classes lik warlocks or mages do not have an ability to wipe 100% aggro whereas hunters do)
Instead, feign death is for the situations where you and your pet get adds or by an unfortunate turn of events you are somehow overwhelmed. I can't count the number of times Improved Feign Death has saved me the 10% durability hit when my pet was unable to hold aggro for whatever reason.
2. A WIDE variety of melee weapons to choose from. If hunters aren't a melee class, why do we even have the ability to wield melee weapons? Mages can't wield 2H swords, Rogues can't wield staffs, but honestly, if hunters are a ranged class, why even bother giving us a melee weapon? Have you ever seen a hunter without a melee weapon armed? I didn't think so. How can a class be a ranged class if they use melee attacks????
3. Kiting a mob and slowly shaving down the hp may suit some slow paced hunters, but I myself prefer to just charge in with the pet and unleash insane amounts of dps (Whenever I duel rogues I always win) Let's do the math here. On one hand you're standing as far away from your pet as possible and cycling through a bunch of boring ranged attacks and on the other each time is a precisely coordinated close dance with fate as you come within inches of death as you unleash devasting dps with your pet. Which sounds more exciting? that's what I thought. Time to get rid of all the points you put in Marksmenship and put it into Survival.
4. Everyone claims that their classes are nerfed. However, in this case it realy is true. Yes I'm going to say it. Melee Hunters are too nerfed! Just because we get a second source of dps, melee hunters have to pay a horrible penalty. Don't believe that melee hunters are nerfed? It's in the talent tree. Notice how to get Readiness you have to drop 5 points into a RANGED talent. I've come to deal with it but in time I am sure blizzard will buff up the melee hunter as it's happened to almost every single class in the game.
5. Pets come in many different varities. You have a pet you can use for tanking and a pet you can use to unleash dps. If you are a ranged hunter you rely on burst dps from your ranged attacks so you want a tanking pet to hold aggro. So why even have dps pets? To run in with you and assist as you unleash a little dps of your own of course!
6. On a sidenote, please note that I'm not saying all hunters were melee. I realize that with the proper gear and spec you can do a lot of damage as a ranged, but I honestly can't imagine the logic behind a ranged hunter. I am up and close to the action with my weapon slashing and hacking next to my pet, where as ranged hunters just stand far from what's happening and cycle attacks. Which takes more talent? Expertly carving down elite mobs while employing various traps and abilities to out dps your opponent? Or just standing in one place and spaming arcane shot? Enough said. One could argue that range hunters are the original button spamming nooblet warlocks but that's another thread for another time.
7. Should rogues be able to roll need on a dagger? If you answered yes, then you have already agreed with me that hunters can roll on swords.
There are two types of rogues. Combat rogues (sword) who do a lot of stunlocks and whittle down the opponent with their swords and Subtlety spec rogues (daggers) who use ambush to get a lot of burst dps then use hemo to generate combo points for the finisher(Like I said, I've rolled quite a few characters I'm not your typical run of the mill huntard)
Note that in raid situations the combat rogue is the optimal choice for DPS. Does this make the sub spec rogue useless? Does this mean that rogues can't roll need on a dagger because sword rogues are better for certain situations? Absolute not. If you agree with logic, then you can see that melee hunters have a right to a sword just as much as a combat rogue. There are situations where ranged hunters excel and situations where melee hunters excel (close quater combat anyone?)
8. Traps. Frost traps, ice traps, whatever you want to call them, they were designed with a melee based class in mind. Can you trap someone who is far enough to shoot? I didn't think so. Traps were intended for use in a melee situation for crowd control such as sap or sheep. If I rush head first into a mob and I'm overwhelmed, I'll lay down traps to cc, but of course if that doesn't work I have my other melee trump card, FEIGN DEATH! Either way, I hope this somehow enlightens all you doubters that hunters ARE a melee class.
I know Hunters get a lot of bad rep but I am absolutely sick and tired of all the rogues trying to tell us how to play our class.
I welcome all MATURE criticism of my theories but I assure you, every time a good sword drops I'm rolling need.
Before you decide to troll, please give the list another good read and try to see the bigger picture. Hunters do no have to limited to just one class. I apologize for the lengthy post but I had a bit of venting to do.
