So...as a tank I am just asking, what is it with mages who like to sheep pull? Can anyone help me with the logic / rationalisation behind this? This is as opposed to the tank pulling then the mage sheeping his/her marked mob when it is closer to the party.

To help you out I will give you the issues I have with it:

1. All mobs aggro goes straight to said mage (even worse on "bad pulls" where more than the intended mobs are aggroed)
2. As we know quite often mobs will path close to each other so when the mob pops out of sheep it can then aggro other mobs pathing close to it
3. Its insane

Pre the raid symbols it was done so people wouldn't break sheep. Mobs would come running and a rogue would think they could suddonly off tank what they thought was an extra mob. To many broken sheep with mobs that close for people that tab thru targets with Auto attack on. Also if the target is at ranged and the person isn't running a sheeping macro then it gives them more time to react should sheep break. But in all my cases a tank should be calling out the pull wether mage will do it or they will and sheep pull should never be done when theres a pat group that comes close to your mob group or like you said you get adds. Mages are used to dieng though so :P. Things to remember when sheep pulling or asking for one. What is your group made of how many are in mob group. Make sure theres no pats. If you have a group lets say 5 in the mob group and lets say you have war rogue hunter mage priest. Sap sheep ice trap pet off tanks warrior tanks. If you have groups of any more then 5 with out 3 methods of CC its kinda pointless to sheep pull in my experiences unless you are in the presence of great aggro control from a warrior/prot pally/feral druid.

1, The "agro" from sheeping is not actual threat, it's just the initial combat beginning and a simple demo shout will pull them right off him, or even better a thunderclap if you have the rage/enrage for it.

2. Don't %#**@ about where a mage places the sheep until something bad happens, or people will tell you how to tank.

3. Insane is waiting ten minutes on a warrior to set up a 3 mob pull, especially when he was probably just tabbed out watching another Youtube warrior pvp/dps video instead of focusing on the instance run.

the same reason non imp sap rogues thought sapping in a crowd was a great idea

Back when I played a mage, I cannot tell you how many tanks I encountered who would sit there waiting for me to sheep pull, even after I explained this and assured them I was quite capable of casting polymorph after the pull. In short, people are stupid.
