Why do So Many People Duel?

I have never understood the widespread fascination with dueling in this game. Why do so many people stand outside IF, SW, UC, and Org for hours at a time and just duel random people over and over?

This is why I don't understand it: There is nothing to gain from a duel. In pvp, you get honor, bg marks, and pvp rewards. PvP in arenas yields arena points and arena gear.

But a duel yeilds nothing at all. There is no character progression associated with this, yet tons of people do it day in and day out.

Why?

Competition and to improve skills. I battle outside SW often its a quick way to see how you match up with players around your own level 1v1. Not everything has to be for gain.

I hate duels, I think that they are a waste of time. . . I downloaded an auto decline duel addon. . . just because I hate getting all the people that challenge me. . . and when they see I have the auto decline mod. . they will challenge me like 10-15 times thinking that I will accept. . . ya right. . .

Generally, people duel for the fun of it and sometimes for the sake of learning how other classes tend to fight even if it's in a very limited way. It gives people a means of controlling how many enemies they are facing at once and gives them the opportunity to learn from that encounter.

Believe it or not, there are many people that PvP for the sake of PvP as well with or without rewards.

So what can you gain from a duel? Just some fun and some knowledge. Some people value those things as much as any other experience.

It is a different kind of honor....one the game doesnt measure........

Not to mention people like to try out new specs with friends before they go to the war front....

besides....theres nothing like pulling off a coup de gra on a friend who thinks he has you on the ropes.

I think you mean there is nothing material to gain from a duel. You won't get any honor or loot. You might get some experience fighting against other classes/specs. You might meet people who are good at PvP and become friends. Who knows? You might even have fun.

people duel because they ahve no life and would rather get destroyed in a duel then go make thousands of gold or get attuned for kara or something - or even for lower levels - just level

Had a guy in general chat today stating:
I will have to let some people win at duelling cause noone dares to take me on. I AM THE GREATEST, and your all chickens.

Another guy replied:

Jusat because we think you suck and duelling is a waste of time, doesnt make you the greates, Noob so shut it!

lol - i have one of those - but he is actually the best on the server - there is a competition on our server for the first one to record and beat him - closet person put him down to about 12% health
